National Curriculum of Basic Education - Essential Competences (Port.)

Foreword for the English Version

In 2001, within the scope of the Socrates Project, Action 6.1.2., “Flexibility in Curriculum and Essential Competences at Basic Education”, the Departamento da Educação Básica of the Portuguese Ministry of Education published a document entitled “O Currículo Nacional do Ensino Básico. Competências Essenciais”, in its original Portuguese version.
Its translation into English immediately started. It was our aim to endow the propect group, the exoerts and other agents interested in educational matters with a document which could lead to the widening and deepening of the debate of the nuclear theme of the project, in an European dimension. The first working version of the English translation was disclosed during an international seminar held in Lisbon, on the 22nd November 2002, organised by the European project.
