The Centre for Social and Cultural Research on Education, located at the University of Joensuu, is composed of researchers from various disciplines, including sociology, pedagogy, psychology, cultural studies, and computer science. This partnership brings together research teams led by internationally acknowledged experts who have extensive research experience. The principal rationale underlying the Centre lies in current socio-cultural and educational developments at global and local levels. Globalisation and glocalisation together with the implications of economic and institutional restructuring processes towards a knowledge-based society, present challenges to educators and educational institutions.
The research theme of the Centre for 2006-2011, Education as a resource in global and local transformation, includes a definition of this viewpoint: education is studied as an economic, technological, cultural and social resource. In addition, the conditions by which education can become a resource are analysed.
