Jean-Louis Derouet is a professor of sociology of education at the Institut National de Recherche Pédagogique (National Institute for Research in Education). He is a member of the group of political and moral sociology at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales – CNRS (School for advanced Studies in Social Sciences).

He is the chief editor of Éducation et Sociétés, an international journal of education and chairs the committee “Éducation, Formation, Socialisation” for the Association Internationale des sociologues de langue française (AISLF: International Association of French-Speaking Sociologist). He also takes part in the coordination of the Network of European Experts in the Social Sciences of Education (NESSE).

He focuses on the political philosophy of justice in education and training in the Atlantic space since the XVIIIth century and works on the redesign of forms of justice and of the State in the context of the welfare State crisis.
