Walo Hutmacher is a Sociologist, a free lance consultant on education systems, and retired University Professor. His area of expertise covers "Equality and equity in education", "Education policy in a changing society", "Public opinion and Schooling".
After his sociology studies at the University of Geneva, he created in 1965 the “Service de la recherche sociologique” (Sociological research department) within the Department of the public education of the Republic and Canton of Geneva. He directed this public research institute until 1997. In parallel he taught sociology of education at the University of Geneva from 1973 to 1998. He was also invited professor at the University of Zürich.
His scientific work relates mainly to three topics: 1) questions of social (in)equality and equity in the educational systems; 2) societies transformation, modification of policies and education systems piloting; 3) evolutions of the public opinion compared to the school.
Walo Hutmacher took an active part in the steering committee of the INES project from OECD (international indicator of the educational systems) and he is still member of the project "School of tomorrow" of this organization.
In the field of social sciences promotion, Walo Hutmacher chaired the Société suisse de sociologie (Swiss Society of sociology) between 1971 and 1982. He was Secretary-general of the Association internationale des sociologues de langue française – AISLF (International association of the sociologists of French language) and chaired the Conseil de politique des sciences sociales – CPS (Council of social sciences policy) of the Académie suisse des sciences humaines et sociales (Swiss Academy of the social sciences).
He is currently president of the Fondation des Régions Européennes pour la Recherche en Education et en Formation – FREREF (Foundation of the European Regions for Research in Education and Training).
